Back from a little hiatus! NYC: Endless Self-Expression

I am back and ready to blog.

NYC is buzzing with so much art and fashion right now it is in SANE. I have been out on the music scene checking out different bands and venues at least once a week and in doing so I have been checking out fashion as well. I can tell you that anything goes right now seriously and the 90s are back especially on the lower east side.

But let's face it, the 90's never really left the LES. Plaid shirts, high waist shorts, Dr. Martens, and that "I am so pained by the world yet I am so over it look" will not be leaving any time soon.

And listen, I love the look just as much as anyone else, although I feel some take the layers thing a little far...to each his own right? I feel like subconsciously I dress a little differently depending on which area of the city I am going to. Anyone else feel that way?

Going to the Upper West Side, one may want to dress a little more polished and put together or more of a "dandy" preppy look; whereas walking through Soho I would totally grab some skinny jeans and a fitted tank or over-sized tee. And the west village makes me want to wear a cute casual dress and go to brunch!

Different areas put you in different moods and make you want to look a certain way.

New York City is a place of endless expression and that is one of the reasons I love it so much. You can seriously walk down the street with a scuba mask, neon tights, and tennis shoes and you won't get much of a double take from anybody.

So don't be afraid to express yourself out there New Yorkers! Or New Yorkers at heart. :)

Ode to the plain white t-shirt

I am temping all day at an office-- aka sitting in front of a computer.
So I figure, when is a better time to blog?

This blog focuses on one of my favorite things: The classic white t-shirt. I think it is one of the most flattering and stylish items of clothing a woman can wear. So simple, yet so many ways to wear it. Also, they can be extremely affordable. Hanes anyone?

A few ways to wear a white tee:

1. oversized or off the shoulder with skinny jeans or leggings.
2. under a black boyfriend blazer
3. normal fit with boyfriend jeans
4. funky scarf to layer
5. style it up w/ accessories like a big necklace or funky fedora
6. tucked into a high-waisted pant
7. tucked into a high-waisted skirt

I am and will always be a true Spice Girls fan.
My boyfriend is an even bigger fan of the gals and has a gigantic collection of Spice memorabillia including dolls, posters, magazines. Yes, he does. I know.

Formerly known as Posh spice, Victoria Beckham has proved herself to be a true style icon both in england and the u.s.

Hoboken, NJ - a hidden gem for shopping and vintage.

When you think New Jersey, you usually think big hair and maybe GTL? Well, not the case for Hoboken. Hoboken is not Jersey, in my book. To me it is just another borough of NYC. Just a breezy 10 minutes from the city by train www.panynj.gov/path/ (only $1.75) and the quaint little town supplies one with a gorgeous view of the Manhattan skyline along the Hudson River.

Another reason I love Hoboken: the shopping.

Not only does Hoboken have some of the cutest upscale boutiques full of extremely unique finds, but you will also find some of the best Vintage shops off the beat and path!

Now unto Vintage/thrift shops in Hoboken...

Revivial Vintage http://www.revivalvintageboutique.com/ 6th and Park Ave. just 3 aves down from Washington st. is a gem of a shop. Seriously one of the best vintage shops I have ever been to. Lindsey hand selects each piece with extreme care. She finds many of her pieces overseas in Brazil or Europe and they are each so unique and fabulous. The clothing is organized by decade so if you are looking for something with a 60s feel, you will be sure to find it. Or need a chic cocktail dress but want it to have 30s flair? She probably has the perfect one for you. Looking for a Hermes bag from the 70s? Revival probably carries it, along with chic hats, shoes, boots, brooches, jewelry, and kitchenware all authentic vintage! It's really an amazing shop and I recommend definitely checking it out. It is worth the $1.75 train fare and stroll over.

St. Mary Hospital Thrift Store 536 Garden st. http://www.maps.google.com/ is right up the street from Revival just one ave away. A great place to donate unwanted clothing/housewares! Here you will find very inexpensive clothing, and they will usually bargain with you on the cost depending on what it is. I got a dress for $3 there once. Their hours are a little funky though: Wed-Sat 12-5...a little odd!

Went to Target and was so excited to see Rodarte had created a line that I can afford! Layers and adorable hemlines make up the line at fashion week nyc. It was actually inspired by Death Valley and vultures... LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS and i could just eat em up. Just a couple pieces from there '10 spring line:

especially love the use of fabric here.

Alexander Mcqueen commits suicide...dies at 40 WHY?

I really can't believe it... Just heard the news and this man, this fashion icon, genius, chose to take his own life. Why? His architectural designs were synonymous with his name and he had a unique interpretation of texture and structure that no other can match. His legacy will live on.

50's Pin-up hairdos! Maybe? I say go for it!

Katy Perry rocks these do's all the time and it totally works for her. If you've got the confidence and the wardrobe to compliment then I say go for it!!

And of course, I have to mention my favorite hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe who does the short hair pinup look...

Also, a fun thing to do for an instant pop of glam is add a flower to your pin-up hairstyle. It is so easy to make these fake flower headbands: simply find some fake flowers at a craft store or online and hot glue them onto a simple headband and voilla!

One of my favorite vintage stores with close to thrift store prices. They sell lots of funky 1970s/80s t-shirts which I love because they have so much character. They also have great dresses from 1960s-now.

Live from Bryant Park Hotel-1st Blog

It was a rush of excitement just getting to set foot in the hotel, not to mention getting access to a room during fashion week 08. I worked in the Spanx room yesterday, and it was all "a-buzz" with catwalk gossip and runway happenings. "Sophia Bush was in here the other day" "The Tyra Banks show may come in and run a special in here today" and "I saw Carmen Electra but I thought it was Fergie, but then I was like 'she's way too pretty to be Fergie'."

Dylan Lauren came in and talked about how she or her father is shooting for the cover of Vogue soon and she sounded really bubbly and friendly. She has a spread of her kiddish but classy apartment in a fashion mag that I will get back to you with the title. She says she doesn't like when people make their homes look like they're straight out of "Fine Living" magazine. She adds her own personal touches and keeps it looking like someone actually lives there instead of looking all stark and cold like a museum.

I totally agree with her on that one, because a home loses it's warmth when it's all about making it look stylish and modern. I prefer warmth with splashes of vintage and some shabby-chic.

I would have given my Prada bag (if I had one) to be at Vera Wang yesterday. But alas! No gift bags were given out?? Hmm... Didn't sell enough dresses to afford a little sample sized La Mer or even a travel-sized Bumble and Bumble shampoo? Come on. I did happen to grab 3 bags of Dale and Thomas popcorn and about $15 worth of fashion magazines from the good ole hotel lobby.
